Steel Beam Reinforcement & Unit Renovation Engineering – Phoenix, AZ
S3DA Design provided structural engineering services for a top-level residential unit renovation in Phoenix, Arizona. The project focused on modifying the existing structural layout to support a revised unit configuration while maintaining safety, constructability, and code compliance.
S3DA’s Scope
- Structural loading analysis for wind, seismic, dead, and live loads applicable to the existing structure and proposed modifications
- Engineering design for reinforcement of the existing steel wide flange beam at the 4th-floor/top-level unit
- Structural calculations for the revised beam strengthening approach using an added steel beam welded to the top of the existing member
- Analysis and design for removal of the existing interior column and redistribution of loads through the reinforced beam system
- Design of a new steel column to replace the existing masonry column
- Structural design of new steel lintels at modified masonry openings
- Verification of existing masonry support conditions, header performance, and connection detailing
- Structural engineering based on marked-up beam and column revisions shown on the renovation plans
Key Challenges & Solutions
A key challenge in this renovation was reworking an existing structural system within an occupied residential building while accommodating architectural layout changes. S3DA addressed this by carefully analyzing the existing framing conditions, redesigning the beam reinforcement strategy, and engineering a new load path after the removal of the interior column. By verifying the existing support conditions and integrating new steel elements into the altered unit layout, the team developed a practical and efficient structural solution.
The Result
S3DA delivered a targeted structural engineering package for this unit-specific renovation, helping the project move forward with clear reinforcement details, revised load transfer strategy, and code-conscious structural solutions. This reflects S3DA’s integrated, cost-effective approach to engineering, with a strong focus on precision, coordination, and efficient delivery. S3DA emphasizes being a single source of responsibility, meeting budget constraints, reducing waste, and meeting deadlines through a modern engineering approach.
