The building has a lot of character to it, there’s a wealth of renovation history to benefit from, and you can be sure the property was built to last. After all, it’s already stood the test of time!

But older properties tend to come with quite a few downsides as well. An old home has come a long way, but it’s certainly gained a few scars on the journey too. And now you’re the owner, you may have to seal over and soothe issues like those below; make sure you’re ready for them!

Insulation

Insulation should be the first check. Older properties don’t have the same kind of insulation we’re used to seeing in houses these days. The walls aren’t likely to have cavities in them, and if they do, they’re going to be empty of any insulating material.

If you have an attic on the top of the house, this is likely to be a pretty bare place as well. Testing to see where heat leaks are using some home sensors will probably show a lot of air escaping via the top of the property.

The Windows

Older properties have a lot of sealing problems. Around the doors and windows are the most likely problem areas, but it’s the windows especially that will cause an issue for you in the future!

You need to double check the integrity of any glass you’ve got fitted at the moment. Check around the pane, looking for cracks and signs of mold, damp, and even rot.

You should also test how much air comes in even when the window is closed and locked, as this is another sign you’ve got some pretty poor insulation in the house!

You’re likely to need a replacement home window service within the next 3 to 6 months after moving in, so make sure you’ve got the budget there for it when the time comes.

Dangerous Construction Materials

Last up, our third most likely problem is the use of dangerous construction materials. An old property built before the 1960s may have some toxins baked into the walls, but even those built during the 60s and 80s can have asbestos lining the roof.

You can get a qualified professional to come round and assess for this issue. If you’re concerned about the potential use of dangerous materials within your new home, arrange this kind of visit ASAP.

Remember, if your home was built over a hundred years ago, there could even be traces of lead in the walls and floors, and that’s not something you’re going to want to live with!

If you’ve just invested in an older property you’d like to call home, these are the issues most likely to crop up while you’re settling into it. Deal with them as soon as you’re able to, and make sure you’re not at risk while you’re getting the removal and/or fixing work done.

["post-11406","guest-contribution","type-guest-contribution","status-publish","hentry
["GET
