Insulation should be the first check. Older properties don\u2019t have the same kind of insulation we\u2019re used to seeing in houses these days. The walls aren\u2019t likely to have cavities in them, and if they do, they\u2019re going to be empty of any insulating material. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you have an attic on the top of the house, this is likely to be a pretty bare place as well. Testing to see where heat leaks are using some home sensors<\/a> will probably show a lot of air escaping via the top of the property. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Older properties have a lot of sealing problems. Around the doors and windows are the most likely problem areas, but it\u2019s the windows especially that will cause an issue for you in the future! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

You need to double check the integrity of any glass you\u2019ve got fitted at the moment. Check around the pane, looking for cracks and signs of mold, damp, and even rot. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

You should also test how much air comes in even when the window is closed and locked, as this is another sign you\u2019ve got some pretty poor insulation in the house! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

You\u2019re likely to need a replacement home window<\/a> service within the next 3 to 6 months after moving in, so make sure you\u2019ve got the budget there for it when the time comes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dangerous Construction Materials<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Last up, our third most likely problem is the use of dangerous construction materials. An old property built before the 1960s may have some toxins baked into the walls, but even those built during the 60s and 80s can have asbestos lining the roof. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
